Grassroots Gender Empowerment Movement Microfinance (GGEM-MFI) is an off spring of GGEM Services, an NGO that supported community development programmes, Gender and Socio-economic relations in respect of women’s position in deprived communities especially through support for the entrepreneurial poor. In the year 2007, GGEM Services conducted an organisational review and some recommendations were made, key among them was the separation of the microfinance programme from the other community development programmes.
The separation of the books commenced in 2008 with the promotion GGEM-MFI and in 2009 GGEM Microfinance Services Limited (GGEM-MFI) was registered as a company limited by shareholdings under the Companies Act 2009 under the Office of the Company Registrar in Sierra Leone. All assets and liabilities of the microfinance programme have been duly taken over by GGEM-MFI whilst GGEM Services provided the majority of shareholdings.
